![]() It was not until the 1970s that the majority of women started working (70%). Conditions for women really did not start to change until they got suffrage in 1919, but even then only a small percentage were in the workforce. ![]() They could not own their own land and very few held jobs outside of the home. Their husbands, fathers, uncles and brothers were the ones imposing extreme limitations on them.ĭuring colonial times and the years following the creation of this country, women were seen as property, passed from father to husband upon marriage. The difference between women and other groups is that they made up half of the U.S. Women were seen as inferior and weaker and like many other ethnic, religious, racial and social groups were discriminated against. Less than 100 years ago women did not have the right to vote, and today there are 20 women serving in the 113 th Congress this coming year.
